On Sunday, June 28th, 2019 the first-ever Cristo Rey Village Council Chef Competition was held at the Central Park.  The event featured seven young talented chefs from Western Belize, including our own Chef Kelvin Harris, who competed for the bragging rights of being named the first ever Cristo Rey Village Master Chef 2019.

Chef Robert Perez and Cristo Rey Village’s Chairman, Mr. Elmer Juarez, developed the idea of a cultural and culinary event that would create entertainment in the local area as well as bring in outside interest. The event featured three, 35-minute culinary rounds with eliminations at each stage where the chefs had to incorporate a secret ingredient at each of the cook offs. These included pork chops (first round), chicken breast & pasta (second round), and T-bone steak (third round).

Kelvin stole the spotlight on the second round when he ignored the dry pasta that had been provided and created his from scratch. Upon receiving first place, Chef Kelvin quoted “In the end, I think the techniques and skills I have learnt and brought to the table during the competition is what gave me that winning edge.” Kelvin dreams to continue developing his culinary skills with the ultimate goal of participating in the Taste of Belize competition in the future.

The San Ignacio Resort Hotel family is extremely proud of Kelvin’s accomplishment and will continue to support his future dreams.

We would also like to extend warm congratulations to Chef Luis Tzib from The Lodge at Chaa Creek for winning second place in the competition.
