Jade Mask

This mask was adopted by San Ignacio Resort Hotel from the Museum of Belize & House of Culture. This mask was found at  Cahal Pech along with 3 large jade celts (prehistoric stone or metal objects with beveled cutting edges used as a tool or weapon). and is dated to the Terminal Classic period around A.D. 800-900. This amazing ancient Belize artifact is made of jade and shell and was used as a belt worn by a royal ruler along with the accompanying celts that were found. Currently, both the mask and the celts are being installed in the Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed exhibition at the
Science Museum of Minnesota, along with other pieces from the Belize National Collection.  The exhibition opens June 21st, 2013.
