Take a Walk on the Wild Side…
The Belize Zoo started as a home to care for 17 animals that were left after filming a 1983 documentary called La Selva Verde. Today, it is home to approximately 180 Belize native animals – all who were given as gifts from other zoos, born there, rescued, or injured, and cannot go back into the wild. This feature gave it its well-deserved nickname ‘The Happiest Zoo in the World’.
You can get up close and personal with them in their natural habitat and learn about the importance of protecting them and conserving the homes that sustain them. As you walk through the beautiful natural walkways, be ready to meet the gorgeous Jaguars, friendly Tapirs, noisy Coatimundis, or the clever Spider Monkey. Have you ever met a Jabiru Stork? You can! Along with many other vibrant birds like the Scarlet Macaw or the Keel-Billed Toucan. The Morelet Crocodiles patiently float around while the Boas play hide and seek.
