The Green Iguana Conservation Project and Dr. Isabelle from the Belize Wildlife and Referral Clinic have been working together for over a decade.
The Green Iguana Conservation Project teams with the Belize Wildlife & Referral Clinic (BWRC) to help Belize's Green Iguana population. The Green Iguana Conservation Project is more than just the San Ignacio Resort Hotel’s on-site tourist attraction. Each year iguanas are reared and released back into the wild, to help curb hunting pressure. Captive iguana breeding and release is technical, and the veterinary care for the iguanas is provided pro-bono by Dr. Isabelle and the BWRC team.
BWRC is a local non-profit veterinary clinic and wildlife rehabilitation center. It provides free veterinary care to Belize's wildlife and key wildlife projects such as the Green Iguana Conservation Project. Dr. Isabelle and BWRC's team routinely conduct health checks and provide veterinary care as needed. Every few weeks, Dr. Isabelle's students from the Wildlife Institute bathe the iguanas, which the iguanas truly enjoy! This medical care improves quality of life, survivorship and releasability for the iguanas, and it provides quality hands-on experience for the veterinary students. It's truly a win-win for everyone!
