This week, the Institute of Archaeology will host the 18th anniversary of the Belize Archaeology Symposium in San Ignacio Town.
The event starts on June 29, 2022, and lasts until July 1, 2022.
Belize was once the epicenter of the ancient Maya civilization with over two million Mayas calling this land home. This beloved destination holds over 600 Maya archaeological sites, which explains why an event like this would take place here.
Return After a Hiatus
Hosted at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel in San Ignacio Town, Cayo, this year’s symposium celebrates a well-awaited and welcomed return. When COVID-19 struck, the hosts closed their doors for the event for two years to keep the pandemic from spreading. This year will bring back the special event.
Reasons to Attend
Researchers and students alike have expressed interest in the poster displays that take place over the course of three days at the symposium. Some of the reasons that you would want to attend the event include:
- Learn about new research and findings
- Look at preceramic Maya artifacts
- Immerse yourself in the culture of Belize
- Meet archaeologists from all over the world
This event matters because the Belize Archaeological Symposium has been recognized as a leader in archaeological information. The areas where they have promoted research include underwater and cave archaeology and Maya and the colonial past of Belize. They also look at the periods of Belize such as the Historic, Paleo-Indian and Archaic periods.
How the Event Takes Place
Over three days, 34 presentations and lectures will accommodate the event. The organizers scheduled the presentations in 30-minute slots with PowerPoint and lecture-style presentations. You will see a one-on-one exchange between researchers and the audience. For each presentation, they will present information for 20 minutes and answer questions for 10 minutes about the presentations.
Many participants say that they love the exchange between the researchers and the audience since it occasionally leads to valuable insights. At large and international events, you often don’t see the exchange like this.
The people who may like this event include:

Attendees of the event may want to look into staying at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel, which is where the symposium will be held.
