Actun Tunichil Muknal
Located in the Tapir Mountain Forest Reserve an hour drive from San Ignacio Town, Actun Tunichil Muknal is one of the most spectacular caves in the region. The hour hike getting to the cave’s entrance is in itself a journey of adventure, traversing a clear river knee deep while shadowed by towering giant trees. The cave holds the remains of many Sacred Mayan rituals, offerings and remains of human sacrifices.
The cave system becomes alive as a crystalline, clear stream runs through the main channel and dramatic stalactites and stalagmites adorn the roof and ledges of many chambers. Only certified guides can conduct tours and the use of safety equipment is mandatory. Several criteria need to be met by persons interested to do this tour. Physical endurance, not afraid of heights or enclose spaces (claustrophobia).
Caves Branch Tubing
The Caves Branch River Tubing is an educational and adventure activity. It entails a short hike for thirty minutes to an hour depending on how much of the cave system you are interested in floating through. The Cave Branch River cuts through jagged, limestone mountains revealing intricate caves adorned with captivating cave formations. The river water is cool and refreshing, and guests can relax on their inflated tube as they drift through this unique part of nature. Barton Creek Cave Tour
Barton Creek Cave Tour is quite a special tour since it can combine hours of canoeing in the cave and inner tubing as well. The main cannel is over 3 miles long and the roof may go over 90 feet high. Many ledges holds the remain of the Ancient Mayan Rituals and cave formation of many shape and color adorn the roof and walls. This activity does not require any physical activity and since the channel is quite wide, it does not give the feeling of close spaces. Large spot lamps are used to illuminate the high roof and guests can have the opportunity to take pictures. Using the same route taken in guests has the chance to inner tube out. |
