2007 National Boys and Girls 16 and Under Tennis Tournament
The 2007 National Boys and Girls 16 and Under Tennis Tournament was held this past weekend at the San Ignacio Hotel Resort and sponsored by Pine Lumber Co.
In the Girls Division, Carrie Roberson advanced to the finals by defeating Shelby Musa in straight sets, and Elly Bedran also advanced to the finals be defeating Zabdy Hess in straight sets.
The finals between Carrie and Elly got started at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday. Both girls came out very confident hitting excellent ground strokes; Carrie was a bit more consistent and took the first set 6-4. Elly realizing that she was down a set then decided to slow down the game in the second set, and only went for her shots when she saw the opportunity was right. The momentum shifted and Elly began to take control of the points. She displayed lots of patience and remained very focus. Elly went on to win the second set 6-0. At the start of the third and final set, Carrie came out very confident and refocused, and she won her serve and took the first game very easily. Elly however remained very calm and maintained her game plan, in playing very consistent and in the end it paid off for her. Elly Bedran went on to win the match and the championship 4-6, 6-0, 6-1.
In the Boys Division Stefan Musa advanced to the finals by defeating Luis Ramirez in straight sets and Michael Sangster also advanced to the finals by defeating Myron Young in a very competitive and entertaining match in three sets.
The finals between Stefan and Michael got started around 11:30a.m. on Sunday. Both boys seemed a bit nervous in the beginning. After the first game however, Stefan seemed very relax and confident. He started displaying his usual craftiness on the court, and most of all was very focused. Stefan went on to win the first set 6-1. The second set was no different, as Stefan remained very focus and stuck to his game plan. Stefan Musa went on to win the match and his second consecutive championship for the 16’s division in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
Mr. Amin Bedran of Pine Lumber Company presented the winners and runner-ups with their trophies and other prizes. Mr. Bedran also recognized and gave prizes to Luis Ramirez for displaying good sportsmanship, Michael Sangster for most improved player, Carrie Roberson for good sportsmanship, and Shelby Musa for most improved player. Representative from the Belize Tennis Association acknowledged Mr. and Mrs. Amin Bedran for their continued support in tennis and to The Belize Tennis Association.
